Custom design can sound really intimidating if you’ve never done it before. You may have a vague idea in your head that custom design requires a lot of creativity, or a specific design, and a lot of time and money. While those things are welcome, they are certainly not required for the design process. Part of the reason you work with us is because we have many years of experience in making what may or may not yet be in your head a reality. And we certainly don’t need to make things from scratch! There are a few different levels of custom work that I will explain for you here. Let’s start small.

Say you have a piece of jewelry already that you mostly like, but there’s an aspect that bugs you. Maybe the setting in your ring is too high and you keep catching it on things. Maybe you have a stone which you think needs more, or less prongs in the setting. Maybe you want to remove or add stones. These are examples of some things that we can easily guide you through and help you with and can easily change the look of your piece.

Another level we might see is someone who has an old piece of jewelry that they don’t like or cannot wear any more, but they’d like to use the materials to make something different that they will wear. For example: someone may bring in a sentimental ring that belonged to a loved one, or which they for some reason are unable to wear. Often, we will take the center stone and make a beautiful ring pendent. This still preserves the idea of the ring, while making it wearable for the client. If that idea is not attractive, we can do lots of other shapes, designs, and pieces that recycle your stones.

The last level is what most people think of and are intimidated by when they hear “custom design”; we call it “full custom”. You are starting from scratch and building a piece from the ground up. You get to pick the materials, the shape, the size, and dictate the details.
